International Foundation Year

Developed for international students, the International Foundation Year is an intensive three-term programme of academic subjects, study skills and English language training designed specifically to provide you with the opportunity to progress to degree study at the University.

Study structure

You can choose one of five Foundation routes:

All Foundation routes are modular in structure. You will study core modules common to each route, plus subject-specific modules, each carefully designed to focus on the academic areas most useful to your chosen degree.

University-style teaching

The International Study Centre at Lancaster University introduces you to the style of teaching that you will experience on your degree. Taking part in tutorials, seminar-style classes and larger group lectures means you’ll be well prepared once you progress to the University.

You will be assessed regularly throughout the course. This will ensure that your progress is on track to achieve the standard required for progression to your degree programme. Your development is monitored through continuous coursework and specific assessments at the end of each term or module. You will also be required to complete a series of presentations and extended essays as part of your overall assessment.

Progression to your degree

When you join the International Study Centre, you will be required to select up to four undergraduate degree choices from the programmes and will receive a conditional offer of a place on one of your choices. We will support you in making appropriate degree choices and in submitting your application to the university, including advice on the completion of your personal statement. An interview or aptitude test may be required as part of the application process for some courses.

Progression to your degree is subject to completing the foundation programme and achieving the progression grades stated in your conditional offer letter.
