International Foundation Year

International Foundation Year

The International Foundation Year is a programme of academic subjects, study skills and English language preparation which is specifically designed to provide international students with a pathway to degree study at Lancaster University, one of the top universities in the UK.

Study structure

We have five Foundation routes and each route leads to degree study in a related subject. Choose one route from:

During the Foundation Year you will study a combination of core units and subject-specific units which focus on the academic areas most relevant to your chosen degree.

University-style teaching

You will learn in a university-style environment. This includes participating in group lectures, seminars and tutorials and undertaking independent study. This style of teaching really helps you prepare for degree study and feel confident about progressing to the University.

Regular assessment

To ensure you make steady progress throughout the Foundation Year and achieve the grades you need, we will give you regular assessments. This includes exams, coursework assessment, presentations and extended essays.

The next step - progressing to your degree

When you start the International Foundation Year you can apply to the University for a degree place. As well as having a distinguished academic reputation, Lancaster is one of the few UK universities to offer major and minor study options to its undergraduates, allowing you to pursue your interests and widen your knowledge outside your core subject area.

If you are studying the Business and Management Studies pathway, you need to nominate four possible degrees. If you are studying one of the other pathways, you need to nominate three possible degrees.

When you join the International Study Centre you will receive a conditional offer letter of a degree place at the University. You can progress onto your chosen degree when you have achieved the required progression criteria.
